HFS Eco-Therapy Program Update!
New Outdoor Event Categories:
Nature Socials, Gentle Hikes, and Tough Hikes
Hearts for Sight (HFS) is excited to share some important updates to our Eco-Therapy Program! To better serve the diverse needs and interests of our community, we’re now offering three types of outdoor experiences:
- Nature Socials for all
- Gentle Hikes for most
- Tough Hikes for some
Why the Change? Our mission has always been to create outdoor opportunities that are accessible, enjoyable, and empowering for blind and visually impaired (BVI) individuals.
Our monthly hikes often attract over 50 participants—but we’ve learned that while some find these hikes too challenging, others are looking for more adventure. That’s why we’re introducing three categories of events to help everyone find the right fit.
Nature Socials – For All
Nature Socials are relaxed, low-pressure outdoor gatherings designed to prioritize connection and nature—with minimal physical activity required. Highlights:
- Parks selected for easy access, clear directions, and peaceful settings
- A few sighted volunteers on hand for short guided strolls or bathroom help
- Flexible arrival and departure times—no pressure to be early or stay late
- Activities may include: chatting, light games, music, bird listening, dancing, or just relaxing
- Bring your own lunch or decide as a group to share a simple meal
Nature Socials happen monthly, alternating between the first Monday and Friday of each month. Everyone is welcome!
Gentle Hikes – For Most
Gentle Hikes are like the easy hikes many of you already know and love—on smooth paths, with a relaxed pace and plenty of time to socialize and enjoy nature. Examples include:
- Franklin Café (Griffith Park)
- Travel Town (Griffith Park)
- Beach walks
These hikes are designed to be accessible to most people, with options to turn back early if needed.
Tough Hikes – For Some
Tough Hikes are designed for those looking for a more physically challenging outdoor experience—longer distances, steeper terrain, and a faster pace. Key Points:
- Participants are expected to finish the hike with the group
- Smaller group sizes for increased safety and better guide support
- Examples: More vigorous hikes like Debs Park, Kenneth Hahn, at a quicker pace
- These hikes are best for those with strong mobility skills and endurance
Tough Hikes offer the chance to explore more rugged trails in smaller, supportive groups.
Choosing the Right Event
To summarize:
- Nature Socials for all
- Gentle Hikes for most
- Tough Hikes for some
We encourage everyone to honestly assess their comfort and current ability before signing up. The HFS Outdoors Team is happy to help you choose the right activity—and may provide guidance if needed to ensure safety for all.
